I love film. I love shooting film. I hate waiting for the film scans to come in, but I love the anticipation during the download and wondering how they turned out. Did I make something I love? Are they in focus? (It’s trickier with my film camera than my digital and my shutter speed is often much lower, resulting in motion blur occasionally.) I almost always love what I got, which is one reason I love film, and this roll was definitely one I was thrilled with. I have certain film stocks that will always be my staple film for client sessions because they are consistent with my clean, classic look. It is fun to try new ones that I haven’t used before for my personal work and different types of light from what I do in client work. This roll was HP5. This film definitely has an old look to it, but I really love how it turned out.
Black and white film is tricky for exposure. You have to get it perfect in camera or the photos will look muddy. I am becoming better though and this roll was great. The more I shoot, the more comfortable I become shooting film and I love that I am incorporating that love into my sessions and sharing what I am passionate about with my client work. I am going to continue to be a Kauai film photographer and hopefully share the love of film with everyone I know. There were so many images that I loved with this roll that I am probably over sharing, but I can’t help myself.
Shot on a Canon EOS3 with Ilford HP5 and developed at The FIND lab.
